United States Foreign Service
The United States Foreign Service, a personnel system within the Diplomatic Service, helps represent America to the world. Members of the Foreign Service serve at any of the 265 American Embassies, Consulates and Diplomatic Missions around the world, as well as Washington DC. They represent America abroad by implementing the foreign policy of the United States and by directly aiding US citizens.
Foreign Service Career System
The Foreign Service "officers" follows an "up or out" career path similar to the military while Foreign Service "personnel" do not. Certain categories of Foreign Service employees may only stay in their rank a limited time; those not promoted must leave the Service. The modern Foreign Service had its birth with the Foreign Service Act of 1924, which consolidated the Diplomatic Service and Consular Service.
