Undisputed Champion

In boxing, the term Undisputed Champion refers to a boxer that has won all the recognized titles in a particular weight class. Whereas in the past there was one recognized title to win in each class, today there are at least 3 sanctioning organizations (the WBC, WBA and the IBF) that have their own champions. Thus, 3 different fighters can claim themselves to be the "real" champion.

If a fighter can manage to win all 3 of these titles in his weight class, then he can be considered the undisputed champion. An example of this was when Lennox Lewis defeated Evander Holyfield in 1999 to add the IBF and WBA heavyweight titles to the WBC title he owned - thus becoming the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World. Mike Tyson also did this when he won all three titles in 1986-1987. Roy Jones Jr. was the undisputed light heavyweight champion in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Currently, no boxer can be called the undisputed heavyweight champion. Vitali Klitschko is considered by many to be the best of the title holders, but this remains to be seen in the ring. Jermain Taylor is the undisputed Middleweight champion, after his defeat of Bernard Hopkins in July 2005.
