Ulysses S. Grant III


 

Ulysses S. Grant III (July 4, 1881 - August 29, 1968), the son of Frederick Dent Grant and the grandson of President Ulysses S. Grant, was an American soldier and planner. He was born in Chicago. After graduating from West Point in 1903 he was assigned to the Corps of Engineers.

Grant served in the Cuban Pacification (1914), Mexico (1916) and World War I. In 1934, he graduated from the Army War College.

During World War II, he was promoted to Major General and was Chief of the Protection Branch of the Office of Civilian Defense, in charge of planning for civil defense of the United States.

After the war, Grant was Vice President of George Washington University. He also served as President of the American Planning and Civic Association. Grant was Chairman of the National Capital Park and Planning Commission.

Grant was Chairman of the Civil War Centennial Commission from 1957 to 1961. He resigned from the commission due to the illness of his wife and also because of the controversies that developed in planning commemmorative events for the centennial of the Civil War. One misstep was using a segregated venue in light of emerging civil rights sensibilities.

Grant married Edith Root (1878 - 1962), the daughter of Elihu Root, in 1907. They had three daughters: Edith, Clara Frances, and Julia.

General Grant was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.
