Grant was the second son of Ulysses S. Grant (eighteenth President of the United States) and Julia Boggs Dent, and brother to Frederick Dent Grant. Born in Bethel, Ohio, Grant spent his early life following his father as he rose from an obscure officer to General of the Army.

Grant attended the Emerson Institute, prepared for college at Phillips Exeter Academy and graduated from Harvard University in 1874. He was an assistant U.S. attorney in New York's Southern District and secretary to his father during his presidency. He married Fannie Josephine Chaffee (1857 - 1909), who was the daughter of Jerome Chaffee the U.S. Senator from Colorado. They had five children, three daughters and two sons: Miriam (born 1881), Chaffee (born 1883), Julia (born 1885), Fannie (born 1889), and Ulysses IV (born 1893). After the death of his first wife, Grant married America Workman Will (1878 - 1942) in 1913.

The later portion of Grant's life was spent as a real estate investor and entrepreneur in San Diego, California. Grant founded the famous downtown landmark U.S. Grant Hotel and was an active member of the burgeoning San Diego community.

Grant died while on a road trip at the Sandberg Lodge on the Ridge Route north of Los Angeles. He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in San Diego.
