Aborigines call the landmark Uluru which has no special meaning in the local Pitjantjatjara language and is also a local family name. Explorer Ernest Giles first sighted the monolith in 1872 and described it as "the remarkable pebble". In 1873, Surveyor William Gosse visited the rock and named the landmark Ayers Rock on 19 July 1873 in honour of the then Chief Secretary of South Australia, Sir Henry Ayers. Since then, both names have been used, although Ayers Rock was the most common name for many years, and remains the most familiar name to non-Australians.
