Ultraviolence refers to acts of extreme violence seemingly performed at random, or with no clear justification (e.g. attacking a defenseless old man for no reason at all). The term was introduced by Anthony Burgess in his novel A Clockwork Orange, in which the main character, Alex DeLarge, lives a sociopathic lifestyle prone to this type of violence, which includes rapes and other typical acts of violence, albeit not justified when performed.
