Character History

Like his original Marvel Universe counterpart, Ultimate Iron Man is plagued by both a drinking problem and a life threatening illness, in this case an inoperable brain tumor which will kill him anytime between six months and five years, which is his motivation for his many acts of philanthropy. He is also an extremely wealthy business tycoon and inventor. Millar chose to imbue Tony's character with an air of arrogance, and he ends up reading more like a thrillseeking playboy than a scientist, as he does in the Earth-616 universe. It should be noted, however, that Tony is still one of the smartest people, if not the smartest person, in the Ultimate Marvel Universe alongside Reed Richards, the Ultimate version Mr. Fantastic.

Recently, Ultimate Iron Man asked Ultimate Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) to marry him, and she has accepted. His engagement gift was a suit of black armor for her to utilize, similar in theme to Earth-616's War Machine.

When Millar and Hitch leave The Ultimates, they will be replaced by Jeph Loeb and Joe Madureira, who will do a story centering around Tony's tumor, due, in part, to the passing away of Loeb's son, Sam, from cancer.
