Ugo da Carpi

Ugo da Carpi (c.1455-c.1523) was an Italian engraver who worked in wood, once thought to be the inventor of the chiaroscuro technique in printing--it is now believed that he improved on an earlier German technique, and that he coined the term chiaroscuro. Most of his prints depict works by Raphael and Parmigianino.
