Ube (宇部市; -shi) is a city located in Yamaguchi, Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 172,793 and the density of 821.10 persons per km². The total area is 210.44 km².

The city was founded on November 1, 1921 and merged with neighbouring Kusanoki Town on 1 November, 2004.

Its industrial base is in chemicals, concrete and steel. Previously a coal-mining town the city has developed an effective policy to improve its environment. In particular it has combatted the problem of air pollution and its success in doing so saw it being recognised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It was added to the UNEP's Global 500 Roll of Honour in 1997 Globabl 500 entry.

In 2005 the city is celebrating 25 years of sister city relations with Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. A sister relationship with Weihai, Shandong Province, People's Republic of China has been in place since May 1992.
