The story of T?r began one evening in January 1998. Heri Joensen met his old bandmate, K?ri Streymoy, at a ball in Copenhagen, Denmark. He shouted at him in a raspy drunken voice through the noise and smoke, "You know, we should jam someday". K?ri shook his head in hopelessness and replied. "No way man, I haven't held a drumstick in two years".

They were soon joined by another former bandmate, bassplayer Gunnar H. Thomsen, making the duo a trio. They began making music which was heavily inspired by Faroese traditional music, Black Sabbath, old Norse mythology, Dream Theater and classical music.

The name of the band somes from two sources. One is the nordic god (of war) Tyr and the other is the album Tyr by heavy metal giants Black Sabbath.

Over the years bandmates have come and gone. Singer P?l Arni Holm and guitarist J?n Joensen (Heri's brother) were part of the band while they recorded How far to Asgaard but left soon after it's release.

Terji Skiben?s joined after J?n Joensen had left the band. Allan Streymoy (K?ri's brother) took over singing duties for a brief stint during which they released the single ?lavur Riddarar?s. After Allan left Heri Joensen took over the vocals. It was this line up which recorded Eric the Red.
