The label was founded as Tee Vee Toons by Steve Gottlieb in 1985. The express purpose of the label at that time was to release Television's Greatest Hits, a series of recordings of American television theme songs.

The label eventually began to distribute other music, particularly synth pop. The first releases of Nine Inch Nails were on the TVT label. One of the reasons TVT Records hate NIN is due to the fact they wanted NIN to sound like Depeche Mode.
