The word trivial has several commonplace senses:

• Concerned with or involving trivia. In medieval universities the trivium consisted of the three subjects studied first: grammar, logic, and rhetoric. This was followed by the quadrivium: music, astronomy, arithmetic, and geometry. Trivia are things studied in the trivium.
• Something that anyone can understand and explain to others — as opposed to something sublime, transcendental, etc., or simply difficult.
• Of little significance or value.
• Ordinary; commonplace; trifling; vulgar.
