Indian family name reflecting the mastery of a brahmin over three of the four vedas (including the Vedic Branch he was born into). Hindu (Brahmin) name from Sanskrit trivedi ?one that knows the three Vedas?, from tri- ?three? + veda ?(sacred) knowledge?. The Vedas are the oldest sacred texts of the Hindu religion. Three of them are regarded as primary but a fourth one was added later.
