Triple play (baseball)

In baseball, a triple play (denoted by TP) is the act of making three outs during the same continuous play. It is a very rare play, since there is usually only enough time for fielders to record a double play at best under most circumstances. The unassisted triple play is the least common type of triple play.

According to the Society for American Baseball Research, there have been 659 triple plays in Major League Baseball from 1876 to June 20, 2005. Of those, 12 were unassisted. In the 2000s, the chance of seeing a triple play in a given inning has been less than 1 in 10,000.

On July 17, 1990, the Minnesota Twins became the first team in baseball history to turn two triple plays in the same game, against the Boston Red Sox. The Twins lost the game 1-0.
