A right-arm fast bowler, dependable right-handed batsman and brilliant fielder, Bailey played 61 Tests for England between 1949 and 1959. He took 132 wickets at the bowling average of 29, scored a century (134 not out) in attaining a very useful batting average of nearly 30, and took 32 catches.

For Essex in English county cricket he was a lynchpin for many years with his swing bowling. His first-class cricket career began just after World War II in 1946 and lasted 21 years as he played 682 matches, taking an incredible 2082 wickets at a bowling average of 23.13. Bailey is one of few bowlers in the history of first-class cricket to take all ten wickets in an innings.

He achieved the county 'double' (1000 runs and 100 wickets in a single season) eight times, a post-WWII record he shares with Fred Titmus, and was selected as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1950.

After retiring from cricket in 1967 Bailey became a cricket journalist and broadcaster. He was a regular on Test Match Special for many years where he was given the nickname "The Boil" - the reasons for this nickname are lost in the mists of time.
