Transylvania (Romanian: Transilvania or Ardeal, Hungarian: Erdély, German: Siebenbürgen, Serbian: ????????????? / Transilvanija, Bulgarian: ???????????? (Transilvaniya) or ???????????? (Sedmogradsko), ???????????? (Sedmigradsko), Turkish: Erdel, Slovak: Sedmohradsko or Transylvánia, Polish: Siedmiogród) forms the western and central parts of Romania. Transylvania was a principality during the Middle Ages.

Geography

Transylvania comprises the regions of Maramure?, Banat, Cri?ana and Ardeal (proper Transylvania). It forms the center and western parts of Romania. A high plateau inside the Carpathian mountain ranges, Transylvania's relief reaches towards the Pannonian plain.

The Transylvanian plateau, 300 to 500 metres (1,000-1,600 feet) high, is drained by the Mure?, Some?, Cri?, and Olt rivers, as well as other tributaries of the Danube.
