Transport 2000

Transport 2000 is a British-based organisation advocating environmentally friendly transport and opposing car use. According to its mission statement, "Transport 2000 is the independent national body concerned with sustainable transport. It looks for answers to transport problems and aims to reduce the environmental and social impact of transport by encouraging less use of cars and more use of public transport, walking and cycling. Transport 2000's vision is of a country where traffic no longer dominates our lives, where many of our journeys can be made on foot, by cycle or using public transport and where you don't need a car to enjoy the countryside or city life."

It is organizationally divided into Transport 2000 Ltd, a campaigning organization whose President is Michael Palin, and the Transport 2000 Trust, whose patron is Jenny Agutter. It is an umbrella organization which includes representatives from trade unions including ASLEF and UNISON, environmentalist groups including the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, Friends of the Earth and Sustrans, and public transport companies including the Go Ahead Group, Arriva, Stagecoach, the National Express Group and the Railway Industry Association.

Transport 2000 opposes all car use, calling car supporters 'wheel nuts'. They support a maximum speed of 20mph on most roads and 50mph on motorways.
