Town Lake

Town Lake is an artificial lake in downtown Austin, Texas, USA, created by the damming of the Colorado River on the west by Tom Miller Dam, and on the east by Longhorn Dam.

Its banks are bounded by portions of the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail, which people run and bike on. Businesses offer recreational watercraft services along the lakefront portion of the trails as well. Zilker Park is also located on the trails.

The Congress Avenue Bridge spans the river and is home to the Mexican Free-tailed Bat -- a colony of 1.5 million inhabits the spans below the bridge. From March to September at dusk, Austinites and tourists alike line the bridge and riverbanks to watch the dramatic sight of the bats streaming out in their nightly quest for insects.

The City of Austin prohibits motorized watercraft on the lake; however it serves as a recreational area for kayaks, canoes, dragon boats, rowboats, etc. The city's warm weather and the river's usually calm waters, nearly ten-mile length and straight courses are especially popular with crew teams and clubs. Teams from northern universities (Chicago, Oklahoma, Nebraska, etc.) train on Town Lake during Christmas and Spring breaks.

Venues on the banks of Town Lake are home to many musical events year-round, including the Austin City Limits Music Festival in the fall, as well as open-air concerts at Auditorium Shores on the south bank and Fiesta Gardens on the north bank. Blues guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan is honored with a memorial statue at Auditorium Shores.
