Toru Kumon
Introduction
Toru Kumon (?? ?) (March 26 1914 - July 25 1995) was born in the province of Kochi, Japan. He graduated from the Osaka University of Science with a degree in Mathematics and taught Mathematics in his home town. In 1954 Toru began to teach his son Mathematics using the Kumon method. This involved constant repetition of key mathematics skills such as calculus. As a result of the method used. Toru Kumon's son was able to do calculus by the sixth grade. Other parents became interested in Kumon's ideas, and so, in 1956, the first Kumon centre was opened in Osaka, Japan. In 1958 Toru Kumon founded the Kumon Institute of Education. It focused on individual study to help reach the child's full potential. Kumon died in Osaka.
