Tonnage and Poundage

Tonnage and Poundage were certain duties first levied in Edward II's reign on every tun of imported wine, and on every pound weight of merchandise exported or imported. Charles I's attempt to levy these without parliamentary sanction was one of the complaints of his Long Parliament. They were swept away by the Customs Consolidation Act of 1787.
