Tom McMahon
Tom McMahon took office Jan. 5, 2004 as mayor of Reading, Pennsylvania in Berks County, Pennsylvania after a landslide win in an election where he received about 76 percent of the vote. His campaign was based on a philosophy that the economically-challenged and crime-ridden city could change for the better. Voters apparently believed him.

Since his win, McMahon has led the charge for the further revitalization of the city through various public/private measures, such as the recently opened Goggle Works, the new Sovereign Bank building at 5th and Penn Streets, and the Riverfront Commerce Center. He has also revamped the city codes and changed other day-to-day operations of how the city runs. In June of 2005, he accompanied students and staff from Berks County Community Foundation's Youth Advisory Committee on a trip to Russia as part of the first ever Russian-American youth philanthropy exchange. Other projects are planned as well, and McMahon's affable personality and hard-nosed decision-making has made him a favorite of many in and around the city.

But there are still those who complain about a lack of codes enforcement, trash on the streets and crime that is still scaring some suburban residents from entering the city.

And Mayor Tom needs a police chief that can redirect the the resources of the police department in a new direction dedicated to make the streets of Reading safer for visitors.
