To Die For is a satirical black comedy film directed in 1995 by Gus Van Sant, starring Nicole Kidman, Matt Dillon and Joaquin Phoenix. George Segal has an uncredited cameo appearance, and David Cronenberg has a small role. The screenplay by Buck Henry is based on the novel by Joyce Maynard (ISBN 0595269397) about the trial of Pamela Smart. Pamela Smart was accused and imprisoned for seducing a young man and convincing him to kill her husband. Kidman was nominated for a BAFTA and won a Golden Globe Award for her performance.

To Die For is one of Van Sant's more innovative films, mixing conventionally-played scenes with fake TV spots and direct-to-camera pseudo-documentary interviews with the characters. The central character, played by Kidman, is a psychopathic airhead who will do anything at all to get on television and achieve fame.
