The book begins on the morning of a funeral. The main character, Davey Wexler, is a teenage girl whose father ran a convienence store. While she was out on a date, her father was shot during a hold up of the store. Her mother decides to take Davey and her younger brother to visit relatives in Los Alamos, New Mexico. During her sojourn there, Davey learns about prejudice, making friends, and moving on.
