Tibet (Tibetan: ????, Bod, pronounced pö in Lhasa dialect; Chinese: ??, pinyin: X?zàng; older spelling Thibet) is a region in Central Asia and the home of the Tibetan people. With an average elevation of 4,900 m (16,000 ft), it is often called the 'Roof of the World'. $55 / 1br - Short term rental $55. per night - $350. per week or longer... (North beach / Telegraph hill) I have a room available to sublet in my flat for a short term rental in the heart of beautiful North Beach, recently voted one of the 10 best and safest neighborhoods in America. The room is available on a per night basis for $55.00 per night or $350. per week for a single or $65 per night and $425. per week for double occupancy. The room is perfect for temporary housing for a person searching for a permanent place or for job related work. I also have a second room available from time to time in the same flat with a California King size bed, which rents for $75. per night for single or double occupancy or $500. per week. The rooms are in a flat and are 15' x 12', carpeted, with 10' ceilings, 3 Bay windows with lots of sunshine, very quiet and come fully furnished, which includes: DSL/Comcast w/computer in room, Television w/DVD player, (No cable - hate TV), CD player, all utilities included with fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer in the flat, all sheets & towels provided if needed, a new bathroom with shower& bath (shared), a lovely garden on the ground floor and a great local cafe at the bottom of the hill. The room is convenient to all transportation, Muni, Cable car and Bart, as well as walking distance to shopping & a gym: Trader Joe's, Safeway's, 24 Hour Nautilus and easy walking distance to the financial district (10 min), Fisherman's wharf, down town, The Academy of Art University or The SF Art institute, etc. Both rooms are very private as they are each located at either end of a long hallway. There is No garage available if you have a car but a temporary resident parking permit can be obtained for that period of time and there is plenty of street parking and a parking lot a block away. The Flat is located on Taylor Street, the cross Street is Lombard (the crooked street) and is one block off of Columbus Ave in North Beach. Regretfully, due to a large number of no shows, without even the courtesy to call to cancel, I now require a 50% deposit to guarantee the room. This is payable in advance either by check or paypal. For further information & questions contact me via e-mail (with preferred dates needed) or call my cell at:415-385-5590 if needed immediately and if available. Namaste ?????? Furnished sublet in awesome community available now! (oakland east) $150 1bd

Furnished short term sublet available now! $150/week or $600/month. Flexible move in dates. I'm traveling to Tibet to study painting for most of October and can't afford to cover rent by myself. I'm looking for someone to sublet for the month of October, although it's possible to move in now. You would be staying in our 'sound room', a sound treated room, not quite sound proof, that's about 12x12. It's furnished with a TV, playstation and games, some DVDs, a twin bed and couch. No closet or drawers, but I'm sure we could figure something out. Friendly dogs and dog savvy cats are welcome. No hardcore addictions, 420 friendly, although none of us are heavy smokers. Short term only please. The apartment is a HUGE warehouse space with a lot of personality (the floor in the main room is painted like a monopoly board). We're really lucky to have gotten it, it's a fabulous space. Located 6 blocks off the Fruitvale Bart, and just of 880 so commuting is easy to San Francisco and UC Berkeley and UC Hayward. We recently moved into the space, so it's not all 'finished' yet, but that does mean that we have enough space to store stuff for you. The Roomates: Jen: 21, a massage therapist. Likes red wine and sitting around chatting. Chris: 27, Chem geek, works as a science tutor and bike repair guy. Likes anime and snowboarding. John: 29, a waiter and med student. Learning to play guitar and sleeps in late. Uma the Wonderdog: a young 60lb lab mix, super sweet, quiet, and well trained. Great with dogs, interested, but not too interested in cats. Sammy: a 3 month old kitten. Mostly aloof, but randomly cuddly. Good with other cats. If you're interested please email me with some info about yourself, what your dates would be, and what your favorite color is and why. Thanks Rachel Keywords: Warehouse, Artist, Fruitvale, East, Oakland, dog, cat, temporary, sublet, furnished

BBtv World: Ancient hermit monk caves of Drak Yerpa (Tibet)

Today's edition of Boing Boing tv is a new installment of our ongoing "BBtv WORLD" series, in which we bring you first-person glimpses of life, culture, and human expression from around the planet. Today, I visit the honeycombed, limestone caves at Drak Yerpa, an ancient religious and historic site near Lhasa, Tibet. Tibetan Buddhists consider Drak Yerpa (pronounced sort of like ?tra-YER-ba?) with its more than eighty meditation caves and temples, to be the ?life tree? of Lhasa. In 1959, the Chinese military demolished most of the temples here. Signs of that destruction are etched into walls pockmarked with bullet holes. The few artifacts that saved from that destruction have been hidden for half a century, only recently reemerging for worshippers. Songsten Gampo, the founder of the Tibetan empire, is believed to have meditated in the very cave we?re walking through in this footage -- way back in the 7th century. A hundred years later, the dark assassin-monk Lhalungpa Pelgi Dorje hid here after killing Tibet?s non-Buddhist king with a bow and arrow (he shot the guy in the eye, then he sped off on a horse covered in black soot). The assassin's black hat was enshrined in a cave here until 1959, when the communist army came in to ransack the site. And Padmasambhava, the holy figure considered ?the second Buddha? meditated and practiced tantric yoga with his yogini consort here. She is Yeshe Tsogyal, and devotees refer to her as "the bliss queen." The pilgrims who walk praying through these ruins are ethnic Tibetans: citydwellers, tribal nomads, traditional monks and nuns. They come to worship at shrines of historical figures and deities, and they pay homage with donations that help cover upkeep of the shrines and to feed the monks who tend to them. Traditional religious practice is evident here, but ethnic Tibetans and human rights advocates argue that true religious freedom does not exist in Tibet. Displaying a picture of the Dalai Lama, for instance, is a crime that brings harsh penalties. Tibetans who revere him as a spiritual leader don't hear news of him on state-run media, unless it's portraying him as a sort of terrorist. When we went to these shrines at Drak Yerpa and others throughout Tibet, we were clearly foreigners, and had just come from the part of India where the Dalai Lama lives in exile. Monks would often pull us aside into quieter corners and ask in hushed voice, "Dalai Lama, have you seen him?," motioning to their eyes, asking for word. -- XJ Link to BBtv episode with downloadable video, and podcast subscription instructions. Tibet: "Beijing 10" return to USA; new Tibet docu "Leaving Fear Behind."

Image above: bloggers, artists, and pro-Tibet activists James Powderly, Tom Grant, Mike Liss, Jeremy Wells and John Watterberg arriving at LAX airport. They and others were held in jail in China for having participated in pro-Tibetan sovereignty demonstrations during the Olympics. More here. (via natdefreitas) Below, Leaving Fear Behind (in Tibetan: ?Jigdrel?), a truly incredible documentary film shot by Dhondup Wangchen and other ethnic Tibetans from inside Tibet, about bringing Tibetan voices to the Beijing Olympic Games. This really is an amazing piece of filmmaking. Wangchen was jailed by authorities in China for making this film. Snip: With the global spotlight on China as it rises to host the XXIX Olympics, Tibetans wish to tell the world of their plight and their heartfelt grievances against Chinese rule. The footage was smuggled out of Tibet under extraordinary circumstances. The filmmakers were detained soon after sending their tapes out, and remain in detention today.
