Thomas Kean, Jr.


 

Thomas Howard Kean, Jr. (born September 5, 1968 in New Jersey) is a Republican State Senator representing the 21st District in New Jersey, which covers parts of Union, Morris, Somerset and Essex Counties. Kean is a graduate of Dartmouth College and is ABD in International Relations from Tufts University. He is a former aide to former Congressman Bob Franks and was a special assistant at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the Bush Administration. He has also been a volunteer firefighter and a volunteer EMT.

Tom's father is Thomas Kean, former Governor of New Jersey from 1982 to 1990. Tom was elected to the State Senate in November, 2003, after being appointed to fill out the unexpired term of Rich Bagger earlier that year. Before that, he was a State Assemblyman from 2001 until his appointment to the Senate. In the state legislature, Tom has been a proponent of ethics reform in New Jersey Government. He was the original sponsor of legislation banning pay to play practices in New Jersey. In addition he has sponsored legislation to streamline government, promote education, protect the environment, and lower property taxes. He serves on the Appropriations Committee and the Health, Human Services, and Senior Citizens Committee. He is a former Vice Chairman of the Assembly State Government Committee.

He recently announced his candidacy for the Senate in 2006, looking to replace U.S. Senator Jon Corzine, who is the Democratic Nominee for Governor. He currently resides in Westfield with his wife, Rhonda, and their two daughters.
