Thomas Hobbes (April 5, 1588–December 4, 1679) was a noted English political philosopher, most famous for his book Leviathan (1651).

Hobbes also wrote numerous other books on political philosophy and other matters, providing an account of human nature as self-interested cooperation. He was a contemporary of Francis Bacon as well as Descartes and wrote one of the replies to Descartes' Meditations.
