His first successful publication was the 1916 collection of stories "Limehouse Nights" centered about life in the Limehouse district of London. "The Lamplit Hour", an incidental poem from this collection, was set to music in the United States by John Penn in 1919. That same year American director D. W. Griffith used another tale from the collection as the basis for his screenplay for the movie "Broken Blossoms".
