Thomas Barnwall Martin (1784-1847)

Thomas Barnwall Martin was the eldest surviving son of Richard Martin, M.P. for County Galway, by his first wife. Following an unhappy conclusion to a love affair with the daughter of a local chandler - broken up by his father - by whom he appears to have had an illegitimate son, Thomas left home to join the army. He served at the siege of Badajoz, Spain in 1812, where he was severely wounded. Despite a personal commendation by the Duke of Wellington himself, Thomas returned to Ireland where he later married, inherited the family estate centered at Ballinahinch in Connemara, and successfully ran for parliament in 1834. He died of famine fever in 1847.
