This Perfect Day
This Perfect Day (1970), by Ira Levin, is a heroic science-fiction novel of a technocratic dystopia. Often compared to Nineteen Eighty-Four and Brave New World, This Perfect Day is more finely crafted and subtle.

Levin avoids the brutality and overt cruelty of Orwell and Huxley. His vision appears plausible, peaceful, and progressive. At its outset, the book violates notions common to the late 20th Century; for example, there is no money; for another, all members are routinely drugged. But it is difficult to oppose this society on technical, rather than ideological, grounds. Ambiguous feelings dog both reader and hero until the very end.
