The Colonies united in the Continental Congress in 1774 and the American Revolutionary War began in 1775. They officially broke away from the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence and established the United States of America.

At the time of the revolution there were 6 other British possessions in North America, which all remained loyal to the Crown. Nova Scotia, Ontario and the former French colony of Quebec were the destinations of thousands of United Empire Loyalists, who preferred to remain under British rule after the revolution; they would be united in 1867 to form Canada, which would later also include Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. East and West Florida were ceded by the British to Spanish rule in 1784 and joined the United States as Florida in 1821.
