The first version of the song was released by The La's in 1988, but failed to chart. They re-recorded it in 1990 for their debut album The La's. Reissued as a single in 1990, "There She Goes" hit #13 in the UK charts (#49 in the U.S.), was the biggest success The La's ever were to enjoy and remains the song the band are chiefly remembered for.

A deceptively simple piece of beautifully crafted melodic guitar pop, "There She Goes" has gained a certain reputation of being about using heroin. The lyrics seem to refer to a woman, but it was stated on some occasions that things lightened up if one had a closer look at certain lines ("There she goes again... racing through my brain... pulsing through my vein... no one else can heal my pain"). Several newspapers ran articles about The La's and their apparent ode to heroin. As Mavers had more or less reclused completely from the music business after his band broke up, the rumour was never definitely confirmed either way.

However it is worth noting that in the 2003 book by MW Macefield, the rumour is scotched by ex-La's guitarist Paul Hemmings.
