Theodore Sorenson

Theodore C. Sorensen (born 1928) is a lawyer and writer.

During the Kennedy Administration Sorensen was speechwriter, White House Counsel and advisor for United States president John F. Kennedy.

Sorensen was responsible for writing some of Kennedy's most famous speeches. He also had a strong role in guiding Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography Profiles in Courage.

He also played a role in resolving the Cuban Missile crisis.

After Kennedy was assassinated, he helped the new president, Lyndon B. Johnson, in the transition just before resigning. LBJ would recall in his White House memoirs the role Sorensen played in the transition, even though he was saddened by the assassination.

In 1965 Sorensen published a biography of President Kennedy. A fascinating insight into the Kennedy White House it was received with outrage in some circles for releasing sensitive material.

In 1977 Jimmy Carter nominated Sorensen director of the Central Intelligence Agency but the nomination was rejected before even being submitted to the Senate. Sorensen was not believed to hold the required experience and his Kennedy biography was held up as an example of his untrustworthiness.

After leaving government he returned to legal practice and political writing.
