The Water is Wide (novel)
The Water is Wide is a 1972 novel by Pat Conroy based on his work as a teacher on the island of Yamacraw, South Carolina. Yamacraw is a poor, run-down island which has no bridges and little infrastructure. The book describes such things as the boat trips to and from the island, the island people and their quirks, and his battles with the school board over things such as fuel.
