The film, very obviously a 70s movie, is seldom taken seriously today, but at the time was somewhat controversial, as many believed it incited real life gang violence. The cast of the film include Michael Beck, James Remar, David Patrick Kelly, the late Lynne Thigpen as the DJ, and Sonny Landham and Mercedes Ruehl cast in minor roles.

The Warriors video game based on the movie is in production and is due to be released by Rockstar Games in October 2005. A remake of the film, to be directed by Tony Scott, has also been announced with a tentative release date of 2006.

The plot of the film, which was adapted from the novel by Sol Yurick and loosely based on Xenophon's Anabasis, focuses on nine members of the American Indian-themed gang The Warriors. At a summit of all of New York City's gangs at Pelham Bay Park, organized by Cyrus of the gang the Gramercy Riffs, Cyrus makes an impassioned speech to try and unite all of the gangs to bring the city to its knees. At the height of the meeting, Cyrus is assassinated, and during the confusion members of The Warriors are pinned as the culprits. Wrongly accused of murder and stranded in the Bronx miles from their home turf at Coney Island, The Warriors also must now deal with the gangs of the city hunting them, guided by an underground radio DJ, who broadcasts reports of the Warriors' progress and whereabouts.
