On its release, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan caused a good deal of controversy because the PMRC saw its sexually explicit lyrics as unacceptable for public consumption. "Special Secret Song Inside" was originally titled "Party On Your Pussy" before the PMRC demanded EMI change it because the original title was sexually explicit. "Party On Your Pussy" has been restored as the title for the 2003 remastered CD.

The controversy did the flagging Chili Peppers no harm, for after the commercial failure of The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Freaky Styley, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan broke the band into the Billboard Top 200 for the first time though it only peaked at #148. Whereas the first two albums had sold fewer than 25,000 copies each by the release of Uplift Mofo, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan sold over 50,000 within two months and has sold over 500,000 copies to date.
