The Treble

The treble is a term in football, meaning to win a country's top division and its two cup competitions in the same season.

• ¹ - The trebles of Shamrock Rovers consisted of league, cup, and shield. Derry City won the FAI Cup, the League Cup and the League of Ireland in 1989.

The Treble is also used to indicate a team that wins three major honors, including a continental club cup competition, in the same season. Among the teams that have won this type of treble:

• Celtic - The 1967 Celtic team, known as the Lisbon Lions, won the Scottish league, Scottish Cup, and European Cup. The team added victories in two other Scottish cup competitions, one of them the Scottish League Cup, that season.
• Ajax - In 1972, Ajax duplicated Celtic's 1967 feat by winning the Dutch Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, and European Cup.
• PSV - They duplicated the Ajax feat in 1988.
• Manchester United - In 1999, United won the English Premiership, FA Cup, and Champions League.
• Liverpool - In 2001, the Reds failed to win the Premiership or Champions League, but won a lesser treble of both English domestic cups (FA Cup and League Cup) and the UEFA Cup. Opposition fans have been known to call this accomplishment the Tin Pot Treble.
