The Simple Art of Murder
The Simple Art of Murder is an essay by Raymond Chandler on the art of detective fiction originally published in The Atlantic Monthly. Later re-issued as a book along with eight of Chandler's early stories (i.e., before The Big Sleep) about the murder of a politician, a hotel detective, missing pearls, and gangsters.

The stories in the book do not, like most of his twenty-odd short stories, feature his most famous creation, the private investigator Philip Marlowe. Even so, the main characters in the story share many of the same characteristics as Marlowe and the noir tone of the stories is easily recognizable for its shared qualities with his more widely known works.
