The Secret Life of Bees

The Secret Life of Bees is a 2002 novel by author Sue Monk Kidd that takes place in 1964, in the state of South Carolina. Lily Owens runs away from her neglectful, abusive father with Rosaleen, her stand-in-mother, after she is arrested for assaulting three of the most racist people in town on her way to vote. Looking off a picture of a black Virgin Mary her mother had left her, she goes to the town of Tiburon and meets a trio of black beekeeping sisters that take her and Rosaleen in.
