The Saint in New York
Leslie Charteris' first novel with an American setting was The Saint in New York (first released as paperback in 1935 by Hodder & Stoughton). It was this book which RKO Radio Pictures purchased and made the basis for their first Saint film. William Sistrom was the producer.

Louis Hayward, a romantic actor, was cast as Simon Templar, an actor not approved by Charteris.

The screenplay was by Charles Kaufman and Mortimer Offner. Ben Holmes, who had directed The Plot Thickens(RKO, 1936) for Sistrom, was the director.

The film was released in 1938. Hayward declined to return for a second appearance as Templar, so the series continued with George Sanders as Templar. Hayward would eventually return to the role in 1953.
