The Rest of the Story


 

The Rest of the Story is a weekday radio segment told by Paul Harvey. Beginning as a part of his newscasts in 1946 and then broadcast as its own series on the ABC Radio Networks on May 10, 1976 and continuing until the present, it consists of a quaint "factual" story about American history, usually with the narrative's main character being a famous American.

Harvey's style on The Rest of the Story is one in which the narrative starts out leaving the listener wondering many things. By the end, however, Harvey has revealed the outcome and identity of the main character (usually, the segment begins with just giving him or her a first name only). The show is not noted for its accuracy or for verification of its stories, and often presents unfounded urban legends as factual.

At least five books collecting the stories from these segments have been published, including The Rest of the Story (1956), Paul Harvey's The Rest of the Story (1977), More of Paul Harvey's The Rest of the Story (1980), Destiny: From Paul Harvey's The Rest of the Story (1983), and The New Paul Harvey's The Rest of the Story (1994).

The Rest of the Story was referred to in the Space Ghost Coast to Coast episode "Self Help," in which Zorak interrupts the show to profess his appreciation for Paul Harvey and proceeds to imitate Harvey's catchphrase.
