The Relic (movie)

The Relic (1997), is a film starring Tom Sizemore, Penelope Ann Miller and Linda Hunt. This Peter Hyams directed feature is based on the best selling novel of the same name, The Relic, by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.

The plot of the film is horror/B-Movie with a monster roaming the dimly lit corridors of Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History (in the novel, the action takes place in New York). The film itself is something else: a tightly knit action packed and extremely well acted summer blockbuster. Despite garnering many genre awards, and getting some very fine reviews, it failed at the box office. Awards included the Stockholm Film and Fantasy Awards and a nomination for the lead actor Tom Sizemore at Boston. However, "The Relic" has found an audience as a cult hit and is praised within internet and film review communities.

With the film?s success with the critics and its awards, there has been a sequel in the pipeline ever since its release. The sequel is likely to be based on the book's own continuation, a novel titled "Reliquary". The original cast members are not likely to return although Hyams has expressed a wish to come back. However, after 8 years, there is little chance of the planned sequel ever making it to the screen, big or little.
