The Murasaki Shikibu Diary
The Murasaki Shikibu Diary (紫式部日記 Murasaki Shikibu Nikki) is a record of the daily life of Lady Murasaki, the author of the Tale of Genji. It covers the period from autumn of 1008, when Empress Akiko was ready to give birth, to the New Year's festivities of 1010 A.D. It sheds light on the way of life and everyday activities that are not mentioned in historical chronicles. It also records the author's appraisal of her colleagues Izumi Shikibu and Akazome Emon, and of her rival Sei Shonagon, as well as the author's own views on life.
