The Merry Widow (ballet)
Australian ballet star Sir Robert Helpmann obtained permission from the Franz Léhar Estate to create a ballet based on The Merry Widow operetta. Sir Robert Helpman created the scenario and staging for the ballet, which was choreographed by Ronald Hynd.

Unlike the operetta, where Valencienne's fan is a major feature, in the ballet there is no fan. Instead, it is a kerchief which is a major feature of the ballet. So, it can be seen that, although the synopses of both the operetta and the ballet are very similar, they are not completely identical.
