The plot concerns a single man adopting a son. The man in question is a science fiction writer so real life science fiction writers are discussed as friends. The story is autobiographical to some extent. The author was an unmarried man who adopted a son. Although the child believing he is a Martian came from a story the author heard about another adopted child. It's interesting to note that nothing inarguably fantastical or science fictional occurs in the story.
