The Marriage of Figaro

The Marriage of Figaro (Italian: Le nozze di Figaro) is an opera buffa (comic opera) composed in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, based on a stage comedy by Beaumarchais, Le mariage de Figaro (1784).

History

The opera was the first collaboration between Mozart and da Ponte, and premiered at Burgtheater, Vienna, on May 1, 1786. Da Ponte removed the pointed satirical elements in Beaumarchais's story and translated it into Italian, the common language for opera of the day.
