It was made into a 2002 film of the same name (also written and directed by Kaufman), which starred Christina Ricci, Steve Buscemi, Kathy Bates, Laura Linney, Summer Phoenix, Joshua Jackson, Clea Duvall, and Janeane Garofalo. Many, if not most, performances of The Laramie Project are picketed by Fred Phelps or his followers. Phelps also faxes a review to newspapers in the city in which the play is being performed: "the fag play 'The Laramie Project' is a tacky bit of melodrama?unaffecting and drearily predictable?without artistic merit or redeeming social value."
