Notable primarily for its removal of Marlowe from his usual Los Angeles environs, the novel deals with the case of a missing woman from a town in the mountains outside the city. It is one of the few Chandler works to make explicit reference to World War II, despite most of Chandler's novels' having been published during that conflict.

It contains one of the all-time classic put-downs, said by Marlowe to Detective Lieutenant Degarmo: "You are a stupid man, Degarmo. Everything you do is stupid, and done in a stupid way."
