The film is a pastiche of "escape-from-dystopia" science fiction films popularized in the late 1960s and 1970s such as Fahrenheit 451, THX 1138, Logan's Run, and Coma. Elements of the film's story and setting also echo earlier revivals of the genre, such as Blade Runner and Brazil, and it also draws heavily from novels like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, and Richard Adams's Watership Down.
