In 1948, The Star owner Eugene C. Pulliam purchased rival evening paper the Indianapolis News. In 1999, The News ceased publication, leaving The Star as the only major daily paper in Indianapolis. The Star was acquired by Gannett in 2000 http://www2.indystar.com/library/factfiles/star/history/2000/star_sold.html.
