The House of Spirits

The House of Spirits is the first novel written by Isabel Allende. The book starts and ends with the same sentence. Two perspectives are prominent... the writings of the main character named Esteban Trueba, and then the compilations of Clara's diary entries by her granddaugter, Alba.

Some readers are disturbed by many of the book's graphic descriptions, while others find the books "magic realism" elements, such as ghosts, difficult. However, The House of Spirits is generally listed among the classics of Latin American literature.

In 1993, it was made into a movie called The House of the Spirits, with Meryl Streep starring as Clara and Jeremy Irons as Esteban.
